Oracle RMAN – ORA-00201: control file version 10.2.0.5.0 incompatible with ORACLE version 10.2.0.0.0

Well, I am glad I hit another error while playing around RMAN utility.

RMAN> alter database mount;
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure of alter db command at 08/05/2013 17:46:20
ORA-00201: control file version 10.2.0.5.0 incompatible with ORACLE version 10.2.0.0.0
ORA-00202: control file: '/u02/orcl/orcl/control01.ctl'

At this point of time, I was wondering if this error is related to the compatibility parameter in my database.

SQL> show parameter
compatible         string            10.2.0
SQL> select * from v$version;
BANNER
----------------------------------------------------------------
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.5.0 - 64bi
PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.5.0 - Production
CORE 10.2.0.5.0 Production
TNS for IBM/AIX RISC System/6000: Version 10.2.0.5.0 - ProductioNLSRTL Version 10.2.0.5.0 - Production

From this 2 output, I knew that the controlfile compatible and database compatible parameter was mismatched.

SQL> alter system set compatible = '10.2.0.5.0' scope=spfile;
SQL> shutdown immediate;

RMAN> startup nomount;

RMAN> alter database mount;
